STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

One of the practical ways we expose our students to STEM is our partnership with Northrop Grumman. During our Achieve Forums held at Johns Hopkins University in the spring and Towson University in the fall, Northrop Grumman's Ana Luisa Ramirez and other engineers from Northrop volunteer and mentor our students. These engineers provide dynamic presentations with information on the fundamentals of engineering. Our students participate in fun experiments and see examples of various products from different engineering fields.  This opportunity provides the students with role models and helps them understand there are exciting and rewarding careers in STEM that are attainable.  Students also learn the importance of staying in school and that they need a college technical degree to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math career.

Each spring we take a group of students to Baltimore Sailing Center and our students spend time learning the fundamentals and process of sailing as well as what it takes to keep a boat afloat and steady. Our students, in an active and experiential way, learn many aspects of Science Technology Engineering and Math in a sail boat by analyzing the weight a sailboat along with the amount of people in the boat and the angle of the mast in conjunction with wind activity.  The students love this experience and learn about one of the fun products an engineer can build and be a part of.  For most of our students this is their first experience on the water. Northrop Grumman has been one of our strategic partners over the last few years and their sponsorship makes programs like this possible.

STEM is ripe with opportunities both in terms of jobs and business. To this end, we partnered with Mirant Corporation (now GenOn) to provide educational grants to Latino high school seniors from Maryland who commit to a Maryland university in order to study a STEM related field. To date we have committed $75,000 to Maryland Hispanic students.
